Background of the Study

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and economic transformation, fostering entrepreneurship among youth is essential for sustainable development. In Damaturu Local Government Area, adult literacy programs have increasingly incorporated entrepreneurship modules aimed at empowering young people with the necessary skills to launch and manage businesses. These programs are designed to bridge the gap between traditional academic education and practical business acumen by combining foundational literacy with entrepreneurial training (Anderson, 2023). Youth in Damaturu, confronted with high unemployment rates and limited formal job opportunities, find that entrepreneurial skills can provide an alternative pathway to economic independence. The curriculum in these programs often includes topics such as business planning, financial management, marketing strategies, and innovation (Bennett, 2024). By integrating these subjects with adult literacy, the programs create a dynamic learning environment that not only improves basic literacy but also equips young entrepreneurs with critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for the competitive business environment (Anderson, 2023). Moreover, mentorship and networking components are often embedded within the program structure, providing practical support and facilitating access to financial resources. Despite these benefits, challenges remain in ensuring that the curriculum is sufficiently responsive to the local economic context and that it addresses the unique obstacles faced by young entrepreneurs in the region (Bennett, 2024; Carter, 2025). Issues such as limited access to capital, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-cultural barriers can impede the successful translation of acquired skills into viable business ventures. The role of adult literacy programs in fostering entrepreneurship is therefore a critical area of study, as it provides insights into how educational interventions can stimulate economic growth and innovation among youth. This study will critically examine the effectiveness of these programs in Damaturu, with the aim of identifying best practices and recommending strategic improvements that can further enhance youth entrepreneurial initiatives.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the promising potential of adult literacy programs to foster entrepreneurship among youth in Damaturu, several challenges persist that hinder their effectiveness. Many young individuals enrolled in these programs struggle to translate theoretical knowledge into practical business strategies, largely due to curriculum gaps and inadequate hands-on training. There is also a noticeable disconnect between the skills imparted through these programs and the actual market needs of the local economy (Anderson, 2023). Furthermore, limited access to startup capital and mentorship opportunities exacerbates the difficulty of launching successful business ventures. While the programs are designed to empower youth, socio-cultural factors and infrastructural limitations continue to pose significant obstacles. The lack of tailored training that considers the unique challenges of the local business environment further diminishes the potential impact of these initiatives (Bennett, 2024). Additionally, inconsistent program delivery and insufficient follow-up support have led to varied outcomes among participants. These issues underscore the necessity for a comprehensive evaluation of the current adult literacy programs, with a particular focus on their entrepreneurship modules. This study seeks to identify the factors that hinder the successful application of entrepreneurial skills and to propose targeted interventions that can enhance program effectiveness. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to contribute to a more robust and contextually relevant educational framework that better supports youth entrepreneurship in Damaturu (Carter, 2025).
